Monday,  1 April 1918

Fine & fairly warm. I was not on any particular duty so had a real good loaf in the mess, most of the day. The troops found a bat & ball  were playing cricket outside the mess most of the day. I took over brigade O.P. from 20th Bty at 5 pm. Lt. Heenan & I went down to have a look at a French Chateau in evening & its a shame the way the troops have pulled it about. We were nearly shot by machine gun bullets coming home.

Our C.O. (Col. Churches) the Adjutant (Capt Greenshields) & the orderly officer (Ken Radford) were all killed by a 4.2 shell falling on Bde H.Q. They were all killed instantaneously. The 7th Bde is attached to the 8th Bde temporaly for tactics.
