[September 24]

A lovely day, saw 5 German prisons come into Bde about 11 AM.  They look fed up.  Had wash in shell hole.

Awakened through the night or early morning with Fritz sending gas shells over.  We had our gas helmets on for about 2 hours.  A cold lie in the bit of a trench with no blanket.  A very thick midsty morning.  Our fellows put over a heavy barrage at day break.  Fritz put a lot of gas shells over about 2 AM but we had our helmets on in time.  I helped to dig a grave for two Aussie's & a Tommy who were killed in little dug out last.  I could not stay to see them burried, they were blown to pieces & the sight made me bad.  The little part of the trench I moved out yesterday was blown in through the night,.  Fritz started to shell after tea & I had to get into a big dugout.  Some Geordies from a 6 inch battery are here.
