[September 23]

A lovely evening.  A horrid sight to see these 3 boys killed & two wounded, its real hell again.

Wakened with the cold & a few of Fritz's shells waked me,.  We dumped our packs & left for a march towards the line, we got to Bde H.Q., about 1½ hours after we arrived Fritz began to shell & killed 3 of our party & wounded, they were sitting in the Mouth of a dugout, me & another fellow had the luck to be in a whole part of the trench about 5 yards away, & as the shelling got too bad we moving along about other 5 yards.  One of the wounded had a broken leg & I set it using my rifle to a piece wood for splints.  4 of us took him to the dressing Stn.  About 50 planes up & heavy from our side, some from Fritz.
