no wharfs there so we are moored to bouys about a mile out. The boat is surrounded by bumboats & the niggers beg for money to be thrown in for them to dive for. We were told we would get leave here but wasn't forth coming at dusk so a lot us took climbed down ropes into the boats & went ashore & had a very good time dodging the picket & looking at the town in rickshaws it is a very nice town the streets are lined with trees we arrived home about 2 am without been seen
Friday 5th
I was one of the lucky ones not caught for breaking ship so got ashore again this morning for a route march through the town. We went through the native quarter it is simply swarming with niggers. They have trams here but Rickshaws seem to do a great business especially with the European portion. The City is very clean & as well paved streets. Fruit is very cheap if you beat the niggers down. if you give them what they ask it is
