reached the heart of the town & then walked back to the southern outskirts, we went to about a dozen estaments in search of one Rachel, whom he had known when in that part of the country before. We did not see her, but met Madeleine at a private house. She was a delightful little girl who spoke good English in a fascinating way. In one of the estaments we ran across Andy Chalmers.
Poperinge is a big town, & has suffered pretty heavily from bombardments. The square & main street run due north & south & thus is right in line with the salient north of Ypres.
