We had coffee at a smashed about house in Flêtre kept by three women  €“ evidently Belgians, for they did not understand French very well, & spoke English very well & explained the cause of the damage done.
First, said she, the Germans came, & they smashed the windows when they arrived, & were afterwards billeted there. Then English troops were billeted there. I fancy the English were billeted first, before the Germans arrived.
Monte Katz stands on a hill some distance from here, & is the dominating note on the landscape. The spire of the convent is silhouetted against the sky &
