Apparently they had rioted some days ago, & consequently their ranks had been depleted by the exit to Australia of numerous undesirables. It appeared to me a great pity that numbers of very young & manly boys should have so deteriorated in serving their country.
Their appearance, language, morals & general behaviour are bad on the whole. This seems to be the result of mixing first with the elder men, & their being grouped by themselves to foster the growth of the bad influence. In addition, things were not improved by the parade ground harsh discipline
