with his Lordship in deeming it a political object that a part should be taken possesion of in Bass's Straits.  My Report of Port Phillip & Kings Island not answering for a Settlement as an agricultural point of view as that report went by the Glatton which did not arrive in England before October his Lordship was ignorant of my having settled the Derwent, and consequently did not know of the necessity Col. Collins was under to remove from Port Phillip, and his preference of the Derwent to Port Dalrymple.  How far this may meet his Lordships ideas in making a Settlement on Van Diemens Island altho not in the Straits I must confes I do not feel my self justifiable in deciding on.  But as my Instructions respecting sending a part the Settlement to Port Dalrymple is decidedly ordered, I have taken every measure to put it into execution.  Col. Paterson who is ordered to have the direction of this Settlement went from hence in May with two Colonial Vessells but from the prudence of the Westerly Winds & bad weather at this time of the year he was impelled to return.  I am now putting the Buffalo
