the whole of Bismark Archipelago German New Guinea Caroline & Marshall Islands, this work had taken the German Surveying vessels some years to complete and when translated & published in the South Sea directory should prove a great value to navigators
Wednesday 23rd Sept.
proceeding towards Frederik Willhelm hafen. 10 am Flag signalled stop. Commander Stevenson & Brigadier Holmes proceed to flagship taken the plans with them. Noon South cape New Brittain SSW 14 miles off. Ships darkened at nights.
F.W. Hafen Thursday 24th Sept.
7.30 am arrived off Frederick Wilhelm Hafen cutters from the Flag "Encounter" & "Berrima" entered the harbour and swept the passages for mines, found none. Returned onboard with two prisoners the Govt. Doctor & the police master Mr Eckhardt. 9.30 am "Encounter" & "Berrima" entered the harbour. The "Australia" & "Montcalm" remaining outside. Landed 250 troops for Garrison together with provision, stores, and ammunition, hoisted the Flag and took possession, met with no resistance the Administrator and all native police (150) was away in the bush hiding left at 5 pm for Rabaul. Was complimented by the Admiral for the work done this day & for bringing the "Berrima" safely
