for hospital train at Paddington.   Went to Southampton instead of Devonport.   Embarked on hospital  ship "Karoola".   Lay to near Southampton all night.

7th-14th
Splendid voyage & very little seasickness aboard.   The food is splendid all round.   Saw Southern Cross on 11th May low down on our track. Two men have been Buried at sea - one on 13th, the second today.

Mail closed today.   It is to go from Sierra Leone tomorrow. I wrote to Mrs. Alexander.

I am giving a course of historical lectures to troops.

15th
Very hot today.

Spent 2 nights & one day at Sierra Leone (Freetown) and coaled from lighters, the natives handling the coal.
