more scarred & barren than the five mile stretch of country between Delville Wood & Beaulenct the first village we reached. From here on the country resembled something of the appearance of the land round Amiens. Trees unscarred by shells were still standing roads though ankle deep in mud & water were in fairly good condition & the green fields with scarce a shell-hole stretched away to the undulations of the east. A sense of relief difficult to explain seems to pervade everyone when they reach this belt of verdure so great is the contrast to the "Realm of Death" round Flers & Geudect. In the villages however
