Early in August we left Flanders via Wizernes, & arrived at Vaire-sur-Somme, near Corbie on the evening of the 8th. Corbie through which we passed once the flourishing township on the Somme was broken & silent. The canal once a busy waterway, was overgrown with weeds & the locks were ruined. The line that morning had in one brilliant drive been carried forward from eight to 12 miles so that in Vaire we camped in the chateau which 24 hours before had been under fire. Early on the morning of the 9th we pushed forward through Hamel wood, Weincourt to Gillaucours. One German long range gun was shelling the road near Warfusee as we passed, but
