alarm and had to 'stand to' this morning, but got no further orders. The Second Brigade went out last night & engaged about 3000 of them at Oghratina & a brigade of New Zealanders went out to Bir el Bayud & held 1500 there or so they say. the latest rumour is that we have fallen back on Katia but I don't know whether that is right. We shall probably go out this evening.

The alarm came at 1 o'clock am. on the 21st yesterday. We went out as far as Katia. the idea, I believe, being to get in touch with the turks & retreat in front of them to Romanih
