Too much has possibly been Said relative to the importance of this office, but it has been thought Just & proper to draw the attention of Your Lordship & that of the Commee to a mature investigation of the Subject, as the Emoluments of office were Regulated by the Last Master, who does not appear to have maturely Considerd the importance of the office, on a Scale below his Expectations & in the opinion of some of his Friends unequal to his Real Deserts or his Just claims
While the Bank paid in Cash he derivd considerable Profit from their Custom, being Employd by them to assess all Bullion offerd to them for Sale at present this Source of Profit is almost dried up & in Truth as it depends wholly on the opinion of the Bank directors who are at Liberty to Employ who ever they think fit in this business, it Can only be Renewd as in considerd similar to the Case of the Engravers, who derive profit by Engraving medals & seals for individuals as an occasional & uncertain advantage for his water Silver.
