My Dear Judge,
Am as fit as ever. I Have just written home. We are at present out of the trenches and I have been lucky (as usual) in getting a good billet with a bed to sleep in, a real bed with springs in it and a mattress. We are in the centre of what used to be , I should say, quite a nice little village. It is now a row of houses the majority of which have been smashed to pieces with "big stuff" and reduced mostly to a pathetic mess of broken bricks and timber. This billet has never been hit but the house opposite has stopped at least four direct hits and the three next to it on the right have been practically flattened.
It is quite cheerful to hear a bad gramaphone grinding out bad music through windows in which all the glass has been replaced by sheets of paper, hessian or army blankets. I have been very busy lately . It looks as though some move is about to take place. The usual symptoms are present but have no definite idea where we are going. One can only make a very shrewd guess.
My leave is not even in sight yet. Some of us have gone but I am a long way down
