inclined – one does long for letters from one's friends, it shortens the distance to the Homeland so much. It is nice to receive them but the duty of replying is onerous, as news is scarce and facilities for writing not too good. Writing has often to be done on the knee or a biscuit box and nearly always at night under a very poor light but I try to keep up correspondence pretty closely.
It was awfully nice of Rita to think of me and send me so sweet a message. I will certainly adopt your suggestion and write to her direct. I have, I think, only spoken to her twice but we seemed to get on well on both occasions. I hope she thinks so too but if I remember rightly she was then engaged. Is this off or not? Any way I will send her a sweet little note. Do you know the one thing I miss out here more than anything else is women's society, but perhaps knowing my little proclivities you are not surprised. I would have liked to visit Cairo after returning from Anzac to see the youth and beauty for a day or two, but I did not think it would be playing the game. My place is with my men so long as I am fit. All the same I do miss the girls, the darlings. I hope Rita will write me in reply.
I am very much interested in this North Sydney outfall case, Cooper's Trustees. I hope the Board will succeed but I quite appreciate what it means to you in the way of work, however no one could handle it better than you. Leverrier should be an excellent man as counsel in a case of this nature. Let me know the result. I shall watch the papers but we get very few. It was bad enough at Gallipoli but the difficulties of transport here across the desert are still greater so I expect newspapers will be few and far between.
Thanks for your verses "God or Allah". Have you published them, if not you should. I well remember your former efforts of 15 years ago –"you have not gone to fight the Boers Billie Holmes etc".
Harry when you get this ring up my dear little daughter and tell I am well and so is Bas and tell her also about her husband. I wrote her a few days ago and indeed do try to do so weekly. I am so glad your wife keeps touch with the little mother. She will appreciate it as she is fond of your wife.
