[Page 10]

I have mentioned before how grateful we all are here for what has been done for us by the women of Australia. They are indeed splendid. How they have worked, and what a lot of time and money they have spent in our interests, but they would be amply repaid if they would realise the pleasure and comfort men have derived in consequence. The Australian army is the best paid, the best fed, and best clothed army in the world, thanks to our paternal government and the generosity of our citizens, particularly the female portion. Our men recognise this and quite realise what is expected of them, and in the hour of trial in the future, as in the past, will not be found wanting. It was a good move sending Mr.Budden to the front. He has done wonder, and overcome almost insuperable difficulties. Without him, I am sure, the Xmas gifts and "Billy Cans" would not have been distributed by Xmas day. We got them at Mudros on Xmas Eve immediately upon our arrival from Anzac, and they acted like a charm and put everybody in a good humour. He is a born organiser and an indefatigable worker, and we all owe him a deep debt of gratitude.

I must now draw to a close, or I shall tire your patience. Please show this to any of my friends, but please see that it is not published except if you think proper, the portion side-lined, as I hold the opinion that when you have anything to say in one's favour it should not be left until one is dead, what is unfavourable unfortunately owing to the weakness of human nature seems seldom to be withheld.

Give my kindest regards to the President and Members of the board, and all my brother officer, tell them I am very fit and well. Out here we seem to be cut off from news, so if my friends will write whenever they have a few moments to spare I will be delighted.
Yours very sincerely
(Sgd) William Holmes.
