sleep, machine guns rattling on our dug out till daylight – got some calls after midnight, the roads were under a heavy fire of set rifles & machine guns – you avoid one, but think the next might be a blighty.
7/9/16 Thursday
Nice bright day. Heavy strafing off & on all day – also at 1 – 3 & 5 pm, it was just awful – our dug out was rocking like fun – Had no sleep & I as most of the men were shifted back, while the strafe was on we had surprisingly few casualtys, We Heard old Fritzs horn blowing for his Ambulance men freely – Officers say our Fire last night played great havoc.

Dull day – Fairly quiet – day & night. One of our Bearers stopped some shrapnel in the arm – One case of Typhoid from the front line.

Fair day – Shifted down to Croix Marchelle. The rats & mosquitoes are the worry of our lines. About midnight we were called out to attend some fellows whose dug out had
