Rev. L. E. Threlkeld (1784 - 1859?)

"A mission was established in Raiatea and Tahaa in 1818 by the Rev. L. E. Threlkeld, J. Williams, and J. M. Orsmond, who settled there in consequence of the earnest invitation of Tamatoa, the principal chief of those two islands...

In 1824 Mr. Threlkeld withdrew.  (Missionary Yearbook, 1889.)

"The change which has taken place in the South Sea Missions... induced the Directors to determine on sending additional labourers... Messrs. Threlkeld & Ellis, with their wives, are nearly ready to embark; but it is judged expedient to detain them for a short time, till  they can be joined by two others. The brethren... are acquainted with some useful arts, particularly with printing and gardening, together with some knowledge of medicine, and will be able, when they arrive at Otaheite, to print whatever may be wanted for the use of the mission, as well as to promote other branches of civilization."  (Missionary Register, 1815).

"Messrs. Threlkeld & Ellis sailed on 23rd January, 1816, for the South Seas."  (Missionary Register, 1816).

"William Ellis, L. E. Threlkeld, sailed in the Atlas, Capt. Meriton, Jan. 1816."  (Missionary Register, 1819).  

"The brethren, Davies, Ellis, Orsmond, & Williams, sailed in the  Hawaii  from Erines, in July 1818, for Huahine, and were soon afterwards followed by Messrs. Nott, Barff, & Threlkeld, the vessel not being able to take them all, with their property, including live stock, he. the first voyage... Soon after, they were visited by Tapa, the King of Raiatea, and several Chiefs, who came to solicit missionaries. Messrs, Threlkeld & Williams therefore availed themselves of the opportunity afforded by the opportune arrival of the brig  Active, to pass over to the latter island... The brethren proceeded to make preparations for a settlement... proposed introducing Indian Corn, Mr. Threlkeld having found that castor oil is useful in most of the diseases of the natives, intended to manufacture it...
