and stormed the Turkish trenches. This had to be done across open country during which they lost a lot. Allan was one of the stretcher bearers of the 6th L[ight] H[orse] and when the others were detailed to the Dressing Station he went forward with the firing party. He got a bullet in the thigh which bled profusely. He bandaged it up himself and then tried to get about to the other wounded. He fell and they put him under some bushes. He got up after a bit and tried to get along. This started the bleeding off afresh, and some of them carried him in. They got him back alive, but the haemorrhage and shock were too severe, and he died quite calmly and without pain. I was about 2 miles away at Anzac Cove, and did not hear of it till tonight. Lieutenant Rutherford told me. He had a bullet through the thigh too, not serious. He spoke highly of Allan's courage and grit, and said "He died gamely". Fargher, McLaughlin and Claude were all in the charge, and got through alright.

I saw Claude Smith tonight. He is
