Assistant -- They wounded three Men with their Arrows one of them died soon after. We were in the midst of Dangers at this time, I therefore thought it necessary to determine who were to be the Masters of this Sea, and with much concern was obliged to fire two four pounders loaded with grape - I believe several were killed or mortally wounded & the cannoes dispersed in great confusion. -- These People are jet black & woolly headed;  they know the use of Iron, but no other mark of their having had any intercourse with Europeans.

December 25th    at St. Helena
I arrived here on the 17.th and am now ready for Sea. It is an infinite pleasure to me to tell you that we have planted ten fine Plants, two sickly ones, & one of every other kind of Fruit we have on board. Colonel Brooke is highly delighted, and will take every means to secure to the Island so great a blessing; but I am told the Yamstooks (as the People born in the Island are called) care little for what I have brought to them
