I had scarce lost sight of M. Bougainville's coast of Louisiade when I met with the Reefs of New Guinea. I entered them in the latitude of 9º :30' S and 145º :00' E from whence running amidst rocks & shoals, I was unavoidably brought in sight of the northernmost Island which I saw when I passed in the Bounty's Launch. I endeavored repeatedly to get hold of the Coast of New Guinea, but the shoals & run of the Tide directed me directed me through intricate channels, and was at last obliged, to get a clear sea, to go through a narrow dangerous pass in the latitude of 10º :12' S & in a meridian with the Westernmost Isle as laid down in my narrative. -
The common difficulties which we must expect to meet with among Rocks & Shoals, attended me in this Navigation - Our Anchors were crippled & Cables much rubbed -Two Anchors became of no use, & to add to our difficulties the Natives were hostile, so that all our Boat Duty was accomplished with great danger.
