RABAUL (Continued) :

INHABITANTS: The Native Inhabitants of the Islands are allied to those of New Guinea, and present many varities of race and language. Those of the Gazelle Peninsular are tall and stoutly built and seem to make fairly useful laborers. Occupations, cultivation of soil and fishing. Most of the Natives speak "Pigeon English."

BUILDINGS: Sufficient buildings to accommodate all Troops are available, there being some excelllent bungalows and very large stores.

HOSPITALS: There are two Hospitals, 1 Native and 1 European.

HERBERTSHOHE:

Herbertshohe is 10 miles by water from Rabaul as the Crow flies, and was originally the centre of Government, being abandoned as their seat of control 5 or 6 years ago. It is situated on the coast, about 4 miles South-east of Schultze Point, the Southern headland of Blanche Bay. It is connected with Rabaul by the coast road mentioned; distance 15 miles. It is estimated there are about 100 white inhabitants and one very large store. The houses are large and commodious with wide verandahs. The Wireless Station is supposed to be about 4 miles inland and is connected by a good motor road, Three roads lead into the interior, probably from Mission Stations (of which there are several) and Plantations. There is a Native Hospital with 20 beds. Water is fairly plentiful from a stream called Matanatua at the Roman Catholic Mission Station. The climatic conditions are not so trying as at Rabaul. No defences. are  Connected by telephone to Rabaul. The local goverment of the settlement is being administered from Rabaul.
