3-15 P. M.

Mr. Mac Lean, formerly a Lieutenant of the Scottish Rifles now a Surveyor in British New Guinea, called.

(1) He thinks each man or two men should take a cheese-cloth mosquito net, which should hang down about 4 feet; i.e. 6 feet long, 4 feet high and 2 feet wide.

(2) Scrub itch infests the jungles. The only preventative is oil of citronella, which should be rubbed on to the skin each morning up to the waist, One bottle per week should be served out to each man. Price 11/- per dozen.

(3) Stowasser leggings preferable to putties, as landing will probably take place in mangrove mud.

(4) Each man should have a bottle with 100 5 gr. tabloids of Quinine Hydrochlor.
Take one 5 gr. tabloid on landing and one tabloid every second day after meals.

(5) One blanket per man only is necessary in the tropics.

(6) Take light macintoshes instead of great coats.

(7) All men should have helmets.

Note:  Items (1), (2), (4) and (7) are especially necessary.

Men going up without mosquito nets or helmets are almost certain to be ill in 10 days.

A book by Dr. Simpson (pamphlet) recommends a SULPHUR Ointment for "scrub itch", but this is not a preventative. MacLean has found only Citronella effective.
