¼ loaf.  Shells in thousands.  Our poor fellows have had a rough time.

[Aug. 11]

I was digging in at our new position, when the Capt called for 3 sigs & I was one of them.  I dug in another place, Oh the shells have been flying over us in Thousands, & we hardly know who they belong to.  Saw 2 Germans surrender.  Got tea & bread in morning & water & bread in the afternoon.  Been in dugout all day.  Went over Parapet to night again & dug some trenches nearer Fritz straightening up his line.  Taking messages through shrapnel.
