List of names re
Surveyor T. Rankin to the District Surveyor at Grafton, transmitting a list of Nativenames and also 5 lists of Native words, peculiarto the Richmond and Tweed Districts
Lismore 8th May 1900
Sir In accordance with your inst[ructio]n the Surveyor General's request of 31st January 1900 - I have the honor totransmit lists shown herunder of native place names and other words, with their meanings.(1) There is very great difficulty inobtaining the correct meaning of native namesof places: as probably the dialects differeven in quite adjacent localities - Some ofthe native words and their meanings willserve to check the meanings given to place names.I have given several of the names numbersto correspond with the number of the wordon the list. If I had had more timeI would have given the English meanings inalphabetical form to facilitate reference(2) I collected most of thesenames and words, from Mr Francis Mcquiltyof Blakebrook, near Lismore: who has moreknowledge of the Blacks: & their language andcustoms, than any other man in the District.
The District Surveyor
