Re aboriginal names of places & their meaningsrequired by the Anthropological Society ofAustralasia
Senior Sergant Sykes begs toreport that he had obtained a List of aborig-inal names of places (herewith attached) & their meaningsfrom Rosie Johnston an old and very intelligenthalf-caste woman living in camp at IllawarraLake. This woman is thoroughly conversant withthe dialect which was spoken by the aboriginesbetween Wollongong on the north & Shoalhavenriver on the South & her information may beaccepted as reliable. No reliance can be placedas a general rule upon information obtained fromold residents at this date; there is only one suchJohn Brown Esq J.P. residing at Dapto who couldafford the desired information but as that gentle-man had been supplied with a form by the Societyinterested & as his knowledge to a great extentwas obtained from the same source as that of theSen.Serg. he (the S. S.) did not think it necessaryto call upon him. the names in attached list arethose of well known places in the neighbourhoodof Wollongong & Dapto, & are written as spelt onthe Parish maps but the S. Serg. had endeav-oured to write them as pronounced by theaborigines originally; the words will be accentedif it is required.
