as if dirt had been thrown into it

During last night it once blew very fresh this in the morn the weather was pleasant tho we felt ourselves rather cold  the Therm 50. Several canoes followd us & seemd very peaceably inclind  inviting us to go into a bay they pointed to where they said that there was plenty of fresh water   we followd them in & by 11. came to an anchor  we then invited two who seemd by their dress &c. to be cheifs to come on board  they immediately accepted our invitation  in the mean time those who remaind in the canoes traded with our people for whatever they had in their boats most fairly  the Cheifs who were two old men  the one dressd in a Jacket ornamented after their manner with dogs skin  the other in one coverd almost intirely with small tufts of red feathers  receivd our presents & staid with us till we had dind   when they we went  ashore into the boat to go ashore they accompanied us  the evening was rainy with heavy squalls of wind  we rowd almost round the bay but found so much surf every where that we were forcd to return  at last we told this resolution to our cheifs who calld to the people ashore telling them to bring off a canoe for them which was immediately done
