(This journal was written from day to day, perhaps with occasional lapses, when several days' happenings were written up at one sitting.  The whole journal is in the handwriting of Sir Joseph Banks.  It was written on sheets of paper, folded to make margins, and the sheets were bound later, after the conclusion of the voyage.)

(After the death of Sir Joseph Banks in 1820, this journal, together with other papers, were placed in the hands of Robert Brown, who agreed to write a biography of his patron; but on account of his infirmities he was unable to do so.  The material was then passed on to Dawson Turner, who had a copy made of the journal, but did nothing further towards the biography.  In 1873 the manuscripts were deposited in the British Museum, where they remained until about 1885, when they were claimed and removed by Lord Brabourne..  The collection was sold in lots at auction.  This journal became the property of (Sir) J. Henniker Heaton, who later sold it to Mr. Alfred Lee, of Sydney, from whom Mr. D.S. Mitchell acquired it when he bought the Lee Collection.)

Sir J.D. Hooker edited the printed version of this journal, which was published by Macmillan in London in 1896.
