Sydney December 1804

Dear Sir

As I have wrote you so lately by the Albion which I hope you have received, I have but little to say as no arrivals have taken place since the Experiment, & it is now Twelve months since we heard any news from England, except an unpleasant rumour by way of Batavia of our Good Kings Death. To you who were so intimately acquainted with his Worth & Virtues the loss must be great if the News has any truth in it & you will easily suppose how anxious we are to know the extent of that report, as well as what has been done on the subject of Invasion.  I am sorry to learn that a report prevailed in England of this place being taken by the French, this News was also brought by the Prize & said to have been communicated by some of the owners of Whalers to their Captains now among the Malaccas [?].  We have had some groundles alarms of that nature but no reality, and I am vain enough to think we should have given them a warm reception, notwithstanding we have a number of staunch N. Irishmen among us.  Who from from their dispersion are now very quiet & prevented from effecting any more of their Wild plans.

Mr Brown will inform you that since his return from the Derwent he has been at our Settlement of New Castle

The Rt. Honble Sir Josh. Banks K.B.
