Friday 2nd July 1915. This mornings Poldhu press stated that the Leyland liner Armenian had been sunk by a German submarine torpedoing her in the English channel. This was the vessel referred to by the Jap. yesterday morning. Code warning sent out at 2.40am instructed all vessels to proceed at utmost speed while in home waters. At 1pm Ushant was abeam about 2 miles off. A couple of lighthouses & wireless stations mark this highly dangerous locality which is our first view of France. Passing Ushant we passed from the Bay of Biscay into the English Channel. At 3pm we met two French cruisers coming South.
