points throughout the city. Passing through the great dockyard gates where we had once more to show our passes, we reached the Ship about 1pm. During the afternoon the Naval Authorities sent us a dockyard engineer to take home as passenger. At 5pm coaling ship having finished we left the wharf & steamed out to the sea. Across the straits from Gib the township of Centa in Melilla (northern Morocco) can be seen. Patrolling the Straits are a couple of torpedo boats, which interrogate every ship passing through. No doubt Gibraltar is a formidable looking place, and I pity the foe who attempts to capture it. About 7pm we passed several whales which squirted as we went by. For some time all hands were puzzled conjecturing what the exhaust was.
