It had struck me that "Yarmouth" had many coolies onboard as coal bumpers and firemen and only few sailors perhaps just sufficient to man the guns.

15th October 1915
Arrived in the harbour of Penang at about 4a.m. At 6 o'clock, when were on the deck, it was still dark. The harbour lights were burning. Coaling commenced soon after. We heard that "Yarmouth" was to go to Hongkong where trouble had broken out.
At 8 o'clock we were taken ashore in a small steamer. We were escorted by armed native soldiers. Almost all Penang awaited us on the pier as well as a detachment of English volunteers. We went through Penang in automobile at full speed. We hoped to be taken to a hotel,
