October 1916

Monday 23
Morning did a little fatigue work, afternoon drill and lecture on future fighting, nightime went for a walk with a couple of mates, pay day but never went for any.

Tuesday 24
Continued on with meal, arrived nearly done at B. Hqrs.  Men had nothing to eat all day, place absolutely a quagmire, mud and slush.  Went on guard for two hours @ night, got hit by a bit of shrapnel bitterly cold, slept in enemy dugout.

Wednesday 25
Still in supports, enemy continually shelling, arm very sore from hit previous night, couple of men killed, several wounded by a shell, one meal all day, very cold and miserable.

Thursday 26
Moved out of supports up to firing line in morning, had to plough a way through mud, guard during day, nightime trench digging and guard again, no sleep, no dugouts to sleep in and very little to eat.
