365. Some account of Savu
[Margin note] Smoke this not above one inch is filld with tobacco so that the quantity is very small to make amends for which the women especially often swallow the smoak which no doubt increases its effects in no small degree
[Margin note] Houses Their houses are all built upon one & the same plan differing only in size according to the rank & riches of the proprietors some being 3 or 400 feet in lengh & others not 20. they consist of a well boarded floor raisd upon posts 3 or 4 feet from the ground over this is raisd a roof shelving like ours in Europe & supported by pillars of its own independent of the floor, the Eaves of this reach within 2 feet of the floor but overhang it as much, this open serves to let in air & light & makes them very cool & agreable the space within is generaly divided into two by a partition which takes off one third from this partition, forward reaches a loft shut up close on all sides & raisd about 6 feet from the ground which occupies the center third of the house besides this are sometimes one or two small rooms taken off of the sides of the house. of the uses of these
