October 1916

Friday 20
Left Yaucourt early, marched four miles then got in French motor lorries riding nearly all day, passed through Amiens, arrived @ some village near nightfall bitterly cold, plenty of soldiers about.

Saturday 21
Marched off again towards firing line, saw thousands of men and horses moving coming and going, camped about seven miles from firing line.

Sunday 22
Left camp after dinner to go into supports line on the Somme passed through row after row of firing guns, got to support about five o'clock, started cleaning trench, sat up all night bitterly cold, guns kept up firing continously without break the whole time, enemy replied occassionally.
