straight on. The green waters of the Channel were at their best behaviour, the sea being quite calm. The Sun was shining brightly, & the air balmy. Eastbourne which is a great summer resort presented a beautiful scene. The first thing that struck the eye being the great pier built about a mile out to sea. Throngs of people lined the sandy beach & some could be seen sporting themselves in the sea. Rather back from the beach were several rows of beautiful villas. Just as one would imagine an English seaside villa would be. At 12.45 we were abeam of the Royal Sovereign lightship.
