I did not catch them till they got to Hatita. The country after leaving Zerka was rough, steep stony hills, red in patches, but seemed terribly dry and parched up then.

At Hatita there were a lot of trucks and carriages and engines etc, also part of a hospital train and some turkish wounded, but I did not have time to look round as I had to go straight on with a troop which had to patrol the the line on up to the next station called Mafrah. Away we went through awfully barren sort of country, but which looked as if it might be good if we got rain, and as we wanted to get back that day we had to keep alternately walking and cantering along, which was pretty hard on the horse, considering we had
