It is wonderful how Jerusalem is waking up - when I first saw it there were hardly any shops open and every body had to be indoors at dark and it looked generally as if it knew there was a war on, now there are shops, banks, YMCAs, and soldier's clubs and tea shops everywhere - well dressed civilians go about the streets; and others drive about in garries with the jangeling bells round the horses necks making it the gay Eastern city once more.

The Jews in Jerusalem are weird looking affairs. They all wear over coats, which come down a bit below their knees, and black felt hats and none of them ever shave.
