all a clean white colour and all in jolly good condition. Zerka was the first village which had Sacassian in it.

The Sacassions are not arabs; they come from some where round in Asia and dress Semi European style, something like Serbs, and all carry rifles and sort of machine guns belts wound round them. They are turkish subjects; in fact are quite the favoured people of the turkish sultan - they get all their ground free and pay no taxes and in return supply the sultan with wives, so our interpreter told me, and they certainly are fine looking people.

These people in Zerka seemed quite friendly to us; and we treated them as civilians. I think the reason why all their villages on the Es Salt
