in a fourth every son is Kumbo and every daughter Buta.

Every family in all the tribes of this part of the

Country consists of one or other of these four sets of

names.   The names are hereditary;   but the mode of

descent differs from any other that I have met with in

ancient or modern history.   The sons of an ippai and

ippata are all Kumbos and  ^the daughters   butas;   the sons

of ippai and kapola are all murris (or baias)

and  ^their daughters   matas.   The sons of murri are ippais, the

daughters ippatas.   The sons of kubbi are kumbos

the daughters butas.   The sons of Kumbo

are kubbis the daughters kapolas

equally exact law of marriage.   They have no law,

and no public opinion against polygamy.   A

man may have as many wives as he can get

and keep:   but they must all be of the right family.

The attempt of a man to take a wife, by persuasion,

force or fraud, who is not of the right name is

punishable with death.   The rules are there:-
