Every family in all the tribes of this part of the
Country consists of one or other of these four sets of
names. The names are hereditary; but the mode of
descent differs from any other that I have met with in
ancient or modern history. The sons of an ippai and
ippata are all Kumbos and ^the daughters butas; the sons
of ippai and kapola are all murris (or baias)
and ^their daughters matas. The sons of murri are ippais, the
daughters ippatas. The sons of kubbi are kumbos
the daughters butas. The sons of Kumbo
are kubbis the daughters kapolas
4. The law of descent is accompanied by an
equally exact law of marriage. They have no law,
and no public opinion against polygamy. A
man may have as many wives as he can get
and keep: but they must all be of the right family.
The attempt of a man to take a wife, by persuasion,
force or fraud, who is not of the right name is
punishable with death. The rules are there:-
