peculiar copiousness of the Dews, which pour from the Trees, as if it had rained, render all the Countries within the Tropicks very much of a piece in point of Climate, and adapts them to afford the same vegetable productions.

There are few Countries of any Extent that do not possess every Species of Soil, to be found in any part of the World.  There does not appear to be any Soil in the East Indies, which is not to be had equally good in Jamaica, nor any situation or exposure, required by Indian Plants, which that Island does not afford.

Many of the Plants of the above Catalogues are proposed to be translated from Sumatra, Borneo, Java and the Moluccas which are either under or near the Line, to Jamaica which is distant from it 17 Degrees.  This possibly may be suspected too great an alteration of Climate for these Plants to undergo without being the worse for it, but I do not find there is any danger to apprehend from this Suspicion.

We know of no Instance to prove that a Plant cultivated under the Line, may not be cultivated with equal Success 17 Degrees from it, or even to the Tropick; but we have many Instances to prove that it can.  To be assured upon this I fixed upon six well known commercial Plants, which are not only cultivated, but grow naturally under the Equinoctial, and upon Examination found as in the following Table, how far from the Line they could be raised in perfection.

1.  Indigofera tinctura Linn.  Indigo
This Plant is cultivate in the greatest perfection from the Equator to the North Latitude of        26o
