about midday on 28th Aug That same evening the Nos. 1 & 2 of Lewis Guns had to go off in Motor Lorries to the line The rest of the Battn went next evening We were taken in lorries as far as Vlamertinghe here we got out & marched up through Ypres on the Menin - Road. to the line at Zonebeke I was put on Battn Hd Qrs as a runner & I had a good strong wind-up more than once whilst we were there Zonebeke was a sector full of ghastly sights dead of both sides were lying everywhere. We had been told that the enemy were mostly boys but I saw some of them dead & they were the biggest boys ever I saw. There were plenty of
