23d  This morn perfectly fine went to see the town of Rochester &c. about the middle of the town on the Left hand as you enter it from London on the front of a house is this Inscription Six travelers not being Rogues Proctors women or Contagiously Diseas'd may have Courteosy [courtesy] [in right margin - 1579] entertainment here for one night. in Comeing into the town you cross the Medway on a bridge of Eleven Arches built of stone & Plac'd upon sterlings like London Bridge - which cause a great fall under it the middle arch is not turnd with stone but coverd with Timber which might Easily be thrown down to stop the progress of an Enemy. On the right hand of the Bridge stands the Castle which has all the appearance of Very High antiquity as well as of having been A much Larger Building than it is at Present the only remains is a square built of Rough free stones with a turret on each corner three of which are square but the fourth rounded on the outside the arches on the inside are circular & have the appearance of Saxon Architecture one peculiarity here I must not forget to Mention which is a well exactly in the Center which is Carried in the Partition Quite up to the top of the Castle Like a chimney. The use of this Singular Whim Does not appear to me unless it was that the upper stories might furnish themselves with water without the trouble of Carrying it upstairs.
