We marched out of Dernancourt along a congested road, each mile bringing us more & more into the realization of things. At first we began to pass our reserve lines of trenches & wire entanglments (destined now never to be used) Then such things a little wooden crosses; shell battered walls, & now & again demolished buildings presented themselves. We had passed Albert well on our left, & after marching all morning we halted about one o'clock at the shattered village of Fricourt, & it was while quietly resting here after
