up to a redoubt on a hill a mile away to watch so I went up with them & we stopped there until 1.30 a.m. The Trench flares were going up for miles on either side but directly in front of us was where the chief fire was concentrated It looked an absolute hell of bursting fire & it seem impossible that anyone could live through it.
I learnt afterwards that our Infantry assaulted it at 2.30 a.m. captured four lines of trenches & the viallage of Pozieres.
July 27/16 (Thursday)
Had a good surprise today – learnt that the 49th W.R. Howitzers horse lines were only ¼
