rural scenery and we'd all been about 18 months amidst the sand so that we fairly drank in the green fields, orchards, gardens & farmhouses. Everyone stopped work in the fields to give us a wave as we passed, while the Kids lined the railway side crying 'Souvenir".
About twice during each day we pulled up at some village siding and carried a bucket or so of water to each horse. These stations were evidently regular halting places for troop trains as the French Red X Society were always ready for us with hot tea.
