had been coming through all night. The carry was one of about a mile, up hill, & in most parts knee deep in sticky mud, making walking an effort without having to carry a heavy man on a stretcher. It was about four in the morning, & we had been carrying constantly from about five in the afternoon, I came in & threw my-self on the sodden floor of my dug-out, wet through, & totally exhusted. I had been there two or three minutes when the call came again. It was then I had to admit that I could not go on any longer. I could kick myself
