blocking the traffic. A Pioneer Officer seeing we were Engineers called on us to give him a hand. We all got on to it. One shell landed on the side & killed three but anyway we got it out, as soon as we did I [ran] off although the officer tried to stop me. When I got home I found out that the officer had taken three of my mates names & was going to recommend them for a decoration. I was a mug not to give him mine.

We were put to a nice little job today building a Divisional baths at Ypres. We have a chance here as there is a bit of cover when he shells.
