and rain in the Bay of Bengal which lasted 24 hours, we lost all our Masts, and was become almost a perfect wreck, expecting every minute to founder, I was necessitated for self preservation, to labour at the Pumps with all my People from 5 in the morning till 2 in the after noon, when the gale abated.

     This fitague [fatigue] brought on a Faver [fever] and Ague, which almost carried me off, & of which I am not yet perfectly recover'd.

     Notwithstanding this Gale, the loss of the Plants was not equal to what I expected; we arrived at Prince Wales Island 21st Novbr :-

     I am happy to inform you, that the Spice plants are thriveing well at this Island.

     Since my arrival here I have cleared a fine piece of Ground for a Bot: Garden, containing 33 Acres.

     It is highly probable that this will shortly become the Honble Company's principle Botanic Garden in India, the expense will be trifling; all kinds of plants thrive well and come to perfection here, it is
